CHAPTER 16

Bondage? Dahlia swallowed too quickly and used her napkin to wipe her lips. What? Correct. She was not into bondage. How had Piper heard such a personal detail about Zee?

Zee had actually mentioned kinks while they were at her apartment. Could that have been a coincidence? Maybe he was actually wanting to be tied to the bedpost? The way people joked about fantasies they really wanted but couldn’t admit. Nope, he’d actually been pretty straightforward and clear. “He’s not.”

“How do you know?” Calista gestured to her own jersey. “If you haven’t even gotten Zee’s shirt off?” She looked at Piper. “The bondage happens after the clothes come off, right?”

Piper slapped her arm. “I wouldn’t know.” They both tilted their heads and nodded at the same time with the precision of sisters.

“Makes sense though, logistically.” Calista smiled. “You did need help with mechanics.” She looked pleased. “Clothes come off first, or the binds would get in the way of taking them off later.”

Dahlia refrained from banging her head on the table and dipped a salted edamame pod into the ginger soy with enough force to make the dark-red sauce spill.

“What are you talking about?” Ronan asked.

All three of their heads popped up and swiveled toward the masculine voice belonging to Ronan Stromkin, their team’s captain and Calista’s boyfriend. He stood behind Calista’s chair. Dahlia had been so into the conversation she hadn’t even noticed him come into the restaurant.

“Mechanics,” Calista said.

“Oh.” Ronan squatted beside Calista and kissed her cheek. “I’m early to pick you up.”

Calista wiggled and smiled at him. She offered him a bite of her pepper steak with her chopsticks. He parted his lips and she fed him a piece.

“Want to pull up a chair?” Piper asked.

“I actually ate earlier.” Ronan checked his watch and looked at Calista. “Will you hate me if we need to box that up? Coach has us on a rigid schedule, and I want to take you home.”

Calista shook her head, and they were boxed up and out of there in five, leaving Dahlia alone with Piper.

“Love them together,” Dahlia said.

Piper nodded. “Never would have expected her fan-crush to actually be her soulmate.”

“Lucky her.”

They both giggled.

Dahlia wrinkled her nose. “I love that they are close, but I hope she doesn’t share everything we spoke about.”

“I don’t see that happening.” Piper leaned in. “I want to know more about you and Zee.”

Dahlia opened her palms and bit her lip.

“If you matched and worked out, that would be wonderful.” Piper’s expression turned somber. “But complicated if you don’t. I so prefer you over his ex. She was a big B. But of course, your happiness matters more.” She lowered her voice so it was quieter. “Tell me about the kiss. I mean, a kiss that ranked less than a five, don’t bother. If he’s all that, you could work on him. But if he’s mixed messages and a low score, yikes.” She assessed Dahlia’s face and arched her eyebrows. “I see. He did better than a five.
